Credit Scores Free

ok so i am trying to find out my credit score but all these places claim its “free” but theres always a catch or you have to use a credit card or debit card to pay for one. anyone know of a true legit free credit report? also how do the scores go about? the score numbers i dont understand, what is a good score?the highest the lowest the average. thanks
